Dear {!firstname},

I often write about being fearless. As many of you know, one of the books I frequently recommend to clients is the classic Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, by Susan Jeffers. Fear of self-promotion, speaking up in meetings, or speaking in front of large groups, asking for a raise, or for a client to pay you what you are worth, can send shivers down the spine of many people and are barriers to success. None of these things are really dangerous, yet we have taught our self to fear them.

Can we be too fearless? I tested that theory the other day when someone attempted to steal my purse in broad daylight as I sat in my car in a parking lot texting a colleague. I fought back, chased down the would be robber ( in 3 " heels) ended up kidnapped in his car and jumping out on the highway - WITH MY PURSE and it contents.

Long story. I do not recommend this fearless behavior. Yet it is a powerful example of the role unconscious instinct can play in making a decision. Not a rational decision to fight instead of flight. Then again neither is fearing something like speaking to groups or asking for money. Moral of this story... it is important to recognize the role our unconscious mind plays in controlling our actions. More thoughts on the role of fear in our lives in this month's feature article How Does She Do It?

How Does She Do It?

Do you ever look at an enormously successful business woman and wonder what distinguishes her from all the rest ... the ones who settle for good but not as great as they deserve?

How does she do it? A very successful person is not just interested in doing her best, she is committed to it. She does what it takes to get what she wants, even though sometimes it isn't easy. She won't settle for good enough. She steps up and speaks out. She learns to get comfortable being uncomfortable as she strives to achieve her stretch goals.

"Good is the enemy of great" is the first sentence of Jim Collins' business best seller, Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't. What he says in his book about the companies he studied applies to people as well. It is easy to settle. You reach a point in your career or your business that is good...but not the best you could achieve and then you become complacent.

Going to the next level isn't so easy. Often it requires you to stretch out of your comfort zone and that can be scary. It is normal to be a bit anxious when we are trying something new. Successful people get uncomfortable but they don't let those feelings get in the way. That is why they succeed.

The less successful let their fears stop them in their tracks. They often "lie" to themselves by making excuses - it's really not that important, I don't care that much, I'm not in it for the money, I don't have time. These phrases are alibi's that can sound very legitimate. When you are fearlessly committed to your goal, rather than making excuses that sabotage your success, you say "I'll figure it out" and make the time, or find the money, or maybe even simply dare to want more.

Regardless of how you define success - a six figure business, a six figure salary, a life with an even balance between work and family, or earning a PhD, you are the catalyst that will determine if you achieve it, or not.

Recognize when unconscious (or conscious) fears and self-doubts are causing complacency. Find someone to take your hand and lead you across the bridge from good (complacency ) to great. Fearlessly be the best you can be!

Dare to be Great! Call or Email me to set up a mini-coaching conversation to get you started. Jean@JeanCaton.net 314.807.6328
